State of Change

Setting Expectations

posted by Ari Berman on 09/03/2008 @ 4:42pm

I predict that Sarah Palin will give one hell of a speech tonight. The McCain campaign is betting on it and the Obama campaign is prepared for it.

The media will swoon and Republicans will rejoice, hoping that Americans will forget everything we've learned about Palin in the past week; her family drama, multiplying scandals and scant foreign policy experience.

I also predict that virtually all of the media coverage following the speech will miss the point. One good speech shouldn't cloud the central question: should McCain have picked Palin and is she up for the job?

House Democratic Chairman Rahm Emanuel smartly made that point today:

"Tonight's speech has little to do with Governor Palin's already-proven skills on the stump, and everything to do with John McCain's judgment. The issue at hand is not whether Sarah Palin can deliver a good speech, and it's not even about her compelling personal story; the real issue of this convention continues to be John McCain. In choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate, John McCain has made the first decision of his would-be presidency, and he did it based on one meeting and one phone call. The result? The Republican Vice Presidential nominee is a brand new governor with no foreign policy experience, who hasn't been thoroughly vetted and tested, and could be one heartbeat away from being the leader of the free world."

It's not sexist to suggest that Palin doesn't have the experience to be Vice President, let alone President. Republicans have been saying the same thing about Barack Obama for months, and would've intensified that message if Obama picked a relative newcomer like Virginia Governor Tim Kaine to join his ticket. But Obama didn't do that. He made a wise, seasoned, thought through decision in Joe Biden. McCain did just the opposite, pulling the trigger in an impusilve, hasty and irrational manner. And when the press started asking tough questions, the McCain campaign provided contradictory answers, then stopped answering and started whining.

Nor is it elitist to point out that her extremely conservative ideology and flirtation with fringe secession groups will turn off a lot of independent and swing voters, including supporters of Hillary Clinton. McCain could've energized the GOP base or reached out to swing voters with his VP selection, but it's a tough bet--no matter how good Palin's speech is--that he can successfully do both.

  1. "I predict that Sarah Palin will give one hell of a speech tonight."

I'll second that prediction. And she'll get a rousing ovation (many, in fact) and the Media spin will be "After a few days of turmoil, Governor Palin has shown one of the aspects that may have led McCain to pick her....the base love her and she makes quite an impression!"

And I'll go further...McCain up by 3-5 points in poll averages after the Convention.

    then...the REAL fight begins.

  2. I sure am enjoying this week. I haven't stopped smiling since last Friday morning.

And after listening to Fred Thompson last night give the best speech of his life, it has only gotten better.

As I said before, all of this firestorm of criticism is because the left (including the MSM who are perhaps most guilty) are running scared.

This is now a ticket for conservatives, for independents, conservative Democratic Catholics and Reagan Democrats. Many of these people Obama hoped to appeal to through Joe Biden.

Now we have a Democratic ticket that just represents old "New Deal" politics vs the maverick reformer, fiscal conservative image; and a VP who can address energy issues in a way neither Obama or Biden could ever hope to.

    Life is getting very good.

    Maybe it's time for you, the resident researcher and archiver of quotes to answer then the questions that are never answered;

What qualifications does Obama have to be president other than being a natural US citizen who is at least 35 years of age?

    What achievements has he had?

What executive or management leadership of any kind has Obama held?

    Next:

What are the responsibilities for the position of Vice President of the US?

To daily inquire after the health of the president (a long standing joke) and the only official responsibility which is to cast a vote in the event of a tie in the Senate.

    So how is Palin unqualified?

There is nothing reasoned or even factual in your response. You are merely regurgitating gossip rag type accusations that are so easily disproved while also contemptible.

There is no reason for her to not run because she has a daughter that is pregnant. You haven't provided a single reason.

To suggest her son is not her own is just beneath contempt. I expect that from slimeballs but before this, you did not appear to be that type of person. Even some of the leftist media types on MSNBC yesterday noted that the rumor was not only despicable but not biologically possible. Tell me, how did Bristol get pregnant with her current child over a month before supposedly having the other baby?

but go ahead, stay with your attitudes; you will find yourself in a very small fringe group.

When Chuck Todd asked her if this was the most qualified woman the Republicans could nominate, Noonan responded, "The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives. Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and that's not what they're good at, they blow it."

Since the economy is listed as the highest priority by most Americans:

What is the expertise of Obama or Biden on economic issues?

What experience does either Obama or Biden have with budget issues?

    Hiring and firing?

(laughably, Obama is now claiming that running for president is his resume experience).

What experience does Obama have with energy issues? Biden?

Why should voters think that Obama is better prepared and qualified to address economic issues?

    Factual?

the facts were wrong about Palin and the AIP as even the NY Times which made the charge has admitted.

The facts are wrong about her baby as the chronology demonstrates

The fact is that there is no law or moral basis for her to be deemed irresponsible for running for president because her daughter is pregnant. So what criticism does she deserve for it? And on what basis?

I find her a responsible and caring parent from everything that has been made known.

The one fact you cite that she initially was for the Bridge before she was against it, is lacking context. She was for it initially during her campaign, but not after she was elected and examined the issue further. A bit of a flip-flop? yes, but one that most would agree was a wise decision.

Sorry, I continue to find your remarks on this to be more like the kind of gutter stuff you find in the most vile gossip rags.

  28. I am fairly convinced that her son is her child. The risks factors for having a child with Down syndrom drastically increase in women over the age of 40.

The argument that Palins lack of experience is irrelevent especially considering the paucity of experience that Obama has fall short. Primarily due to the fact that the Nation has had the opportunity to get to know Obama over the last 19 months, we know his history , we know where he stands on issues, we know his judgment and intellect. We don't know Palin and have only about 2 months to figure out who she is. From what I have learned she is a female Dick Cheney and is about as far right as you can get. She is also vindictive firing people who she disagrees with and running a small towns economy down the drain. The issue of her child and her to be grandchild are irrelevent in the scheme of things. If anything they distract from the fact that by McCains choice of a hyper neocon for VP he is once again endorsing the policies of the Bush administration. Considering that McCain is 3 years shy of the average life expectancy for a US male, raises the level of importance and need for scrutiny of his VP choice.

Who is Peggy Noonan? She is one of a handful of the nationally known conservative pundits who has brain, brawn experience, stature and respect.

She is an author of seven books on politics, religion and culture, a weekly columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and was a primary speech writer and Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan. She is considered a political conservative.

She has been awarded honorary doctorates from Miami University, St. John Fisher College, her alma mater Fairleigh Dickinson University, Adelphi College, and Saint Francis College. She was nominated for Emmy Awards for her work on The West Wing and America: A Tribute to Heroes.

Anyway, she was on an NBC segment with Mike Todd today, and after she was finished speaking, her microphone remained "hot" and she continued to speak with the other guest, Republican consultant Mike Murphy. As some of you may know, satellite feeds remain live, and since the microphone remained on, and was apparently recorded by someone, you can clearly hear the continued conversation. She trashes both McCain and Palin. Calls it "political bullsh*it." and laments that "its over." Very telling, as it is a very candid and intellectually honest, and it comes from a well respected conservative. The fact that it is her private thoughts, and not public spin makes it even more credible.

You think any sane Republican will ever go before a "mixed" (i.e. not 100% Religious Right) audience and push for "abstinence only sex ed" again?

With the name "Bristol Palin Johnston" out there????

Why don't you answer MY question first?

Why when you guys CONTINUALLY brought up Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, "Michelle said she was never proud of her country", "Obama being treated like a Messiah", etc., etc., etc.

was that not an example of YOU guys panicking?!??!??

  52. What happens when John McCain doesn't draw as many viewers to his own speech at the convention as his VP choice? How do you spin that?

Yeah, LVLIB tried that "premarital sex is murder" line too....falls pretty flat.

You REALLY think people are so dumb that they're not going to think "Hmmmm? Good solid Christian family....THE most solid conservative mom....and the girl STILL gets knocked up?!??!?!"

and think "Maybe condoms AREN'T so bad???" (as compared to having little Susie give birth before the Senior Prom?)

And that's why this issue is important: The abstinence only policy failed in Palin's own household; how the hell could it succeed nationwide? This but one example of failed policies that Republicans still cling to...policies that have been disproven...policies that need to change.

No, the coverage is of Palin's support of a FAILED POLICY and how it has personally impacted her own family!

Study after study shows that abstinence only leads to MORE teen pregnancy and more STDs.

And here is a VERY visible reminder of that fact in Palin's daughter.

So, how is AO sex ed EVER going to be even considered viable....when THE family which should have seen it succeed....utterly fails at its premise?

Of course LL basically said he didn't care if more teens got pregnant...just SAYING we oppose premarital sex makes us a moral country....despite the consequences. And of course Bristol will be sitting pretty...still able to get an education and a good career....UNLIKE all those other teen moms, taught AO, who won't.

BTW, while the AO kids get pregnant...MY kid will be told to "wrap that rascal...every time" and go on to college and start a family at a time and place of his choosing.

So, eventually, who'll be more successful?

    See above.

AO kids, whose mom is NOT the Governor of a state or potential Veep, won't get the same breakes as Bristol Palin....

but hey...atleast we'll SOUND like a more moral country, huh?

  57. they are only human..

We also preach "do not murder"...but there are those who do ..do we stop suggesting not to murder?

    Posted by JOMAMMA at 09/03/2008 @ 9:28pm

    nope.

best thing to do is murder those who do.

Everyone but the farthest right SHOULD be in a panic. If McCain wins and dies that hypocritical, undereducated putz will be president and as desperate as I am to see a woman in that office before I die she is a train wreck waiting to happen.

What was the matter with Libby Dole or Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Christie Todd Whitman? Even Condi Rice(Lord, I gag saying this)is more qualified than Sarah Palin. I wouldn't vote for any of them, but I wouldn't be afraid to have them in the white house if McCain died. (Well, Condi is a little scary...and I really like Whitman).

If they had to pick a right leaning woman, McCain had dozens of better options. He doesn't even pander well.

  59. "What are the responsibilities for the position of Vice President of the US?

To daily inquire after the health of the president (a long standing joke) and the only official responsibility which is to cast a vote in the event of a tie in the Senate. "

Actually, the VP takes on a number of jobs over and above his constitutional responsibilities. Bush the elder headed up task forces on deregulation and drug policy. Gore headed up task forces on government efficiency, information technology and the environment. I hardly need to point out the importance that Cheney had.

Obama is the better choice for President because he has the better policies.
